I think advertising is generally the way to go, unless you want to add special memberships with frills that cost more than basic memberships. I like the idea of advertizing based on keywords in a member's profile. For example, if a person writes in her interests that she likes coffee, make it so that your website will generate Starbucks adverts when she logs in. I like your idea, btw.
